Dawn Friesen, Ph.D.


Dawn Friesen Dawn Friesen, Ph.D., P.Chem. (AB), is a research chemist with Stepan Oilfield Solutions in Houston. Her career includes almost 10 years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, specializing in chemical product development for hydraulic fracturing and acidizing stimulation fluids.

She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba and received her Ph.D. in synthetic organometallic/main group chemistry from the University of Victoria. After post-doctoral work at the University of Calgary studying the decomposition of ethylene polymerization catalysts (a joint project with Nova Chemicals), she was awarded an industry R&D fellowship from the Government of Alberta that resulted in a position as a stimulation R&D chemist with a Canadian-based well service provider. Since joining Stepan in 2016, Dawn has applied her industry experience to help expand Stepan’s ability to provide chemical solutions to the oilfield.

Throughout her career, Dawn has demonstrated her ability to communicate technical information to non-specialist audiences and has presented several workshops and training seminars to both internal and external clients. She is a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada, the American Chemical Society, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. As a graduate student, she served a one year term as Secretary for the Manitoba/NW Ontario section of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Dawn is a registered Professional Chemist in the province of Alberta.
