Stepan Oilfield Solutions to Present on New Foaming Agents and Screening Methodology at ADIPEC, Nov. 13 – 16

Stepan Oilfield Solutions, a market vertical within Stepan Company, will be presenting on its development of novel foams for high temperature steam applications at the upcoming Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), Nov. 13 – 16 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Aaron Sanders, Ph.D., will present on the development of novel foaming agents for high temperature steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) applications. The paper addresses a new class of high temperature foamers that extend the current range of cost-effective foaming agents for SAGD applications. These foams represent another tool available to service companies and operators for solving issues in the field. 

The new screening methodology utilizes a gas inducing impeller to create foam in a high pressure cell fitted with viewing windows. The impeller, unlike the typical bubble column, removes the issue of evaporation and allows a degree of approximation on foam quality because the system is sealed and has a well-defined volume. The mobility of steam foam in porous media is produced using a sandpack with permeabilities in 1-10D range and uses Nitrogen as the non-condensable gas phase.

The foaming results are described for three surfactants (C16-18 AOS (control), Agent A and Agent B) at 150°C and 250°C in the screening test. At 150°C, all three foaming agents create a relatively stable foam. At 250°C, the control no longer foams, however, the new surfactants create foam that survives for several minutes in the visual cell. Coreflood results in a sandpack at 250°C, show that the results of the bulk foam correlate with the mobility reduction over a range of foam quality from 60 to 85 percent. Potential applications for high temperature foams will be discussed in light of the results.

About the Presenter  

Dr. Sanders, R&D manager for Stepan Oilfield Solutions, has worked in the petrochemical industry for 15 years. He has a broad background in the use of surfactants in upstream oilfield applications, particularly production, stimulation, and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). He has been a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 2006 and has co-chaired sessions in the SPE Middle East and North Sea workshops on Flow Assurance. His key technical contributions have been in the areas of high-temperature-stable surfactants for use in steam foam, as well as CO2 soluble surfactants for miscible gas flooding. Dr. Sanders is an author on more than 40 patents and papers. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from The University of Wisconsin – Madison.
